POEM: The Gift of Aloneness

Time to stare out of the window
thinking of nothing in particular

Noticing little things usually ignored
by people who think they're too busy

The ant crawling up the outside glass
of my window, the zigzagging flight
of a seagull on the harbour front

The tick tock of my kitchen clock
that sounds like a stern reprimand
to the passing of time

― I'd never noticed that before ―

Moments of reflection about times
that weren't so calm as now

Occasions when I felt bullied and
stressed by people who thought they
were better than I

― but really they weren't ―

Aloneness is a luxury, something to be
cherished and embraced, not hated or feared

― in this crazy world of ours ―

It is the gift I am grateful for every day
