A poem for the 26th annual American National Poetry Month
The Music of Silence
In a world of noise
strife and unrest
silence is my
kind of music
In a world where
people shout out
their ideas like
foghorns to be
heard above the
rabble of the ordinary;
In a world where
being quiet or shy
is an impediment;
in a world such as this
silence is my
kind of music
In the music of silence
I can hear myself think;
I am able to reflect on
what is important in life;
what is redundant, stale,
jejune, fit to ignore and
cast from my mind
In the music of silence
I have room to form new
dreams; write poetry and
prose bold and rich in
meaning or simple and
abstract, just as the mood
takes me
In the music of silence
I can be myself, the person
in my heart I know
I really am
