The thing
about people
is they're stressful
like the noise
of a pneumatic drill
in the street
the hum and chatter
in a crowded room
before an event
a gaggle of geese
flying south for the winter
the German shepherd dog down the sreet
barking at the postman
on his round
the crying of the neighbour's teething baby
two ten-year-old boys playing with
marbles in the uncarpeted hallway
of the apartment above
the buzzing of a wasp trapped under an upturned glass
young Max learning to play the saxophone
or his five-year-old brother practicing
to be a Formula One driver for when he grows up
The thing about people
is they're interesting,
but mostly better
viewed, appreciated
and interacted with at one remove
at least for a hermit like me
