POEM: After the drawing 'Still Life (1938)', by Lee Krasner (1908 - 1984)

Lee Krasner (1908 - 1984) 'Still Life (drawing, 1938)', Whitney Museum, New York

After the drawing 'Still Life (1938)'
by Lee Krasner (1908 - 1984)

 Skeins of colour, blue,
orange, yellow, green,
black, brown and mellow

tones of beige and cream
snake and fleck the white
canvas in a style reminding

me of Kandinsky. Like him
Krasner melds bold moments
with delicacy, fragility and

dancing elegance; the finest
poetry ever executed by the
use of a brush and an artist's

mind. A sense, more than visual
recognition of a nature scene;
some sublime combination of

sky- and seascape, perhaps; the
boldest hues imaginary figments
of the land's riches — leaves,

stones, flowers, insects even;
the palest blues and pinks
a fairytale of clouds and water

the magic creatures biding
within, just beyond what the eye
can see, but which the mind

can conjure; a drawing, painting,
a collage of colours and illusions
that is art in abstract perfection
